Dr. Griffin and his family have lived in Elkin, North Carolina since 1981. Although he moved to several different states as he was growing up, he considers himself first and foremost a North Carolinian. Both parents and all his ancestors are from the state, including one Thomas Griffin who fought in the Revolutionary War. After marrying his high school sweetheart Linda, Dr. Griffin attended Duke University Medical School and stayed at Duke for a three-year residency program. He is Board Certified in Family Practice and Geriatrics, and in addition to his full-time primary care practice he serves as the Medical Director at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center.
Dr. Griffin's wife Linda is a historian and artist and teaches history and social studies. His son Josh is a chef, married to Allison Sloop, massage therapist and home health case manager. His daughter Margaret completed film school in 2005. Dr. Griffin is an ordained minister in the Community of Christ and serves as congregational pastor. His hobbies include: poetry -- he has published over 100 poems and one chapbook; birding -- he has a 10-year pin for performing spring surveys with the USGS; backpacking -- tackling a little more of the AT each summer.
